THE BLOOD OF RAMESES

Karina recovered quite quickly. Khyfami hurried to pour out a glass of water from a carafe on a side table, but before he could bring it back to her she was sitting up. She drank some of the water and apologised in a faint voice for her silliness.
“I ought ter be the one to apologise,” said Mr. Budd, shaking his head. “It was my fault. I shouldn’t ’ave sprung it on yer so sudden. You know this man, Gary Janson?”
“We met him in Cairo,” said Khyfami. “A very pleasant young man . . .”
“A very obstinate young man,” amended Mr. Budd. “I take it you was quite good friends?”
“We saw quite a lot of him, then,” said Karina. She was leaning back against the cushions and her face was very pale. “But we know very little about him . . .”
“’E’s the son of Janson, the American millionaire,” said Mr. Budd. “How he got mixed up in this business I don’t know, but he’s in it up to his neck . . .”
“He can’t possibly have had anything to do with the murder,” whispered the girl. “It’s impossible . . .”
“Well, I don’t know,” remarked the big man. “’E’s behavin’ very queerly if he’s an innocent man . . .”
“In what way?” inquired Khyfami, and Mr. Budd sketched the situation briefly.
“If he’d explain what ’is business was with Glomm,” he said, “we might get somewhere, but he won’t. He just won’t talk at all. It’s a very stupid attitude to take up. I was wondering, you bein’ friends of his, if you couldn’t give him a hint as to ’ow stupid he’s bein’ . . .”
“I don’t think he would take very much notice of anything we could say,” said Khyfami, doubtfully. “You see, we only met him for a while, while in Cairo . . .”
“When I found ’im, he was comin’ here,” interrupted Mr. Budd. “Which shows he ’adn’t forgotten you. Maybe, if you saw him an’ ’ad a little talk, ’e’d listen to reason . . .”
“Where is he?” asked Karina.
“In Cannon Row police station; that’s practically part o’ Scotland Yard,” answered the superintendent. “He hasn’t been charged with anythin’ yet. We’re just detainin’ him on suspicion at present, but we’ll have to make a definite charge against ’im soon . . .”
“I’ll see him,” said the girl, suddenly. “If you will tell me when I can do so . . .”
“I’ll make all arrangements,” said Mr. Budd. “What about termorrow mornin’ at half-past ten? Would that suit you, Miss?”
She nodded.
“Then I’ll come along an’ fetch you,” he continued. “In the meanwhile, I’d be glad if you would tell me how you came to meet Mr. Janson?”
“He was staying at Shepherd’s Hotel in Cairo when we were there,” said the girl. “It was the first time he had been to Egypt. He was on a holiday, and we offered to show him the places of interest.”
“I see,” murmured Mr. Budd. “Just a holiday
